Patches of bare earth ignite truffle dreams

Some very exciting news- earlier this autumn we received photos from our welsh plantation showing a very distinct ‘brûlé’. A brûlé is a burnt-looking patch of ground, devoid of vegetation underneath the tree caused by the truffle fungus- these normally take several years to appear and signal imminent onset of fruiting of the truffle. This is particularly exciting as they have appeared on around 70-80% of trees planted last winter! With an average age of 9months (from planting), these results are every exciting indeed,

Truffles down under, some of the most expensive truffles in the world

Whilst northern hemisphere truffle hunters are busying themselves in the summer
truffle season, July is harvesting time for the Perigord truffle (Tuber melanosporum)
in the southern hemisphere. With productive plantations in both New Zealand
and Australia and with South Africa soon to follow, southern hemisphere truffles
are growing in both recognition and demand. The rewards are there too, with
Australian truffles priced at $2,750AUS/kg (£1,333GBP)and New Zealand

Black truffle results in Devon, UK

We have just finished the yearly analysis of the root system of our winter truffle (Tuber melanosporum) plantation in Devon, UK.
The results were excellent, with 80% of the 3-5cm root samples showing a thriving truffle fungus.

The results are extremely encouraging. Whilst most of the UK has a suitable climate for the summer truffle, it has previously been thought that the UK climate is unsuitable for the winter truffle. These early indications
suggest that it may be possible to grow this species outside of its natural habitats.
