VODKA - the natural way to taste truffles?

The very first bottles of the world’s first, truffle infused vodka go on sale this month. Vodka is not the only alcoholic drink to use truffles and there are a range of alternatives from Brandy to a number of liquors. For a number of these concoctions, it is the Périgord truffle that lends its flavor, infamous for its rich, earthy aroma and distinct taste. There are products which use just truffles for the flavor but as with most truffle oils, a synthetic and chemical flavor often listed as ‘truffle aroma' is often added. For those interested in these alcoholic drinks, they can
be excellent in cocktails and mixers but do make sure that the flavor is not synthetic and that there is enough truffle to give you a real taste!

The world’s most coveted and expensive edible may be coming to a vineyard near you, thanks in part to the American Truffle Company, a business that is introducing the science of truffle cultivation to the wine world. Unbeknownst to many, truffles can be coaxed to grow beneath young oak and hazel trees, whose roots have been inoculated with Tuber melanosporum/aestivum, the truffle fungus. In fact, 95% of the winter Perigord truffles from France are sourced from inoculated trees.
